How long have you been freelancing?
I have been freelancing since I moved to London 6 years ago. It took a little bit of effort to get that first contract but once I had my foot in the door, it has been busy busy busy.
Why did you decide to go freelance?
When I moved to London it was always my plan to travel Europe and see a little more of the world, so having a full time position was never that made sense. I needed the flexibility of taking time off and managing my own work load.
How did you get into Designing?
I was always a creative student that really enjoyed and excelled in art subjects at school, so studying design at university and then working in the design world was a natural progression for me. It's where I have always felt most comfortable.
How has YJ helped you as a freelancer?
YJ has opened a whole new way to freelance for me. I can pick and chose what contracts to apply for, the rate I want and when I am available rather than being offered whatever the recruiter wants to offer you. The other major bonus if the security of being paid every 2 weeks, not waiting and pestering the client for payment.
What's one thing no one ever told you about freelancing you wished you'd known at the beginning?
Set up your own pension as soon as you can. Don't let recruitment officers down skill you, if you feel like you are worth more... then push for it.
Can you tell me about a project you're proud to have worked on?
Designing the UX and UI for the first of it's kind app that allows large scale printing companies to track stock and orders throughout their factory and country as a whole.
If a client was reading this, why should they hire you?
I am a passionate designer who is working in the only field he has ever wanted to work in. The fact that I was voted the 2018 Freelancer of the year should show my quality and value.
How would you describe yourself and / or your work in a single sentence?
Fun, free spirited individual that believes that not taking life to seriously is the secret to living with a smile on your face, which in turn shows in the work you do and is contagious for the people you work with.
